Hi and welcome! My name is Mark Western.

How Do You Know?

Let's face it, without a personal referral finding a decent therapist or coach online can be a frustrating experience. Not to mention the time involved. â€‹

When looking for a good therapist, I believe people are trying to answer two crucial questions:

1. Do I like this person? Can I trust him? In other words, will I feel safe enough to open up and explore my issues?

2. Does he/she have the right mix of knowledge and experience to help me?

On this page I'll try to answer

these two key questions.

Let me start by sharing a little about my background; and my long-term passion for psychology and human transformation.

I also recommend you take a quick look at the FAQs pages (ADHD / Couples / Sport) where you'll find specific information related to each.

Originally from Canada, I've been in Asia 25+ years now. For most of that time I've been a student and teacher of psychology, personal development and counselling - leading workshops and offering one-on-one coaching/counselling in both Taiwan and Hong Kong.

What's unique about my approach?

Actually a few things. Scroll below.

I've worked extensively in the fields of psychology, education and publishing, most recently as head of school here in Hong Kong  (for 11 years). I'm the "unskilled" and unlikely author of over 100 books - children's stories, a few ESL textbooks and one adventure memoir.

Apart from psychology, publishing and education, my other great passion lies in sport and physical challenges. Over the years I've been fortunate enough to accomplish several mini "firsts" including: first person to kayak solo around both Taiwan (2004) and Hong Kong (2016); and first person to run around all of Hong Kong - 360km, 7 days (2018).

That covers a little about my background and bio. See below for a list of my professional qualifications and certifications.

Enough about me.

THIS IS ABOUT YOU!

I realize it may be difficult choosing a therapist or coach based on a short website profile. As a next step, feel free to get in touch with any preliminary questions you may have... I'd be happy to answer them!

OR take a leap of faith and book your "RISK-FREE" first session. Nothing to lose. Full details below.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Specialist Knowledge

There are currently close to 300 different mental health conditions. I can't pretend to know them all (how could I?), however I do have specialist knowledge in a few areas - Couples Counselling, ADHD and Sport Psychology. Think about it. If you needed eye surgery, would you visit a GP or an ophthalmologist? I believe the same logic should be applied to the mental health space. Specialist care for specific issues.

30+ Years

Teaching, coaching and counselling have been my life for the past 30 years, mainly because I'm fascinated with the complexities of the human mind AND body, and the potential we all have for wellness and greatness. I also enjoy working with people from different cultures, ages and backgrounds and being a "mentor" of sorts when given the chance. That being said, I'm no "expert" by any means. At best, I have some knowledge and training combined with real-world experience, which hopefully provides a framework for helping people.

Coaching & Counselling - Best of Both

For many years, I was a life/mind coach and mentor for men's groups; and in more recent years a counsellor and sport psychologist. As a result, I'm able to bring different modalities into the process. I use the practical, results-driven mindset of a coach to quickly identify a client's core issue or blind spot and to create a roadmap for moving forward in alignment with one's highest values. At the same time I’m using my knowledge of human psychology and psychotherapy to interpret how an individual is impacted within a broader context including: core needs, family dynamics, negative self-talk, comorbid conditions, personal beliefs, relationships, personality, fear & anxiety, one's upbringing, the subconscious, unprocessed trauma, feelings, self-esteem, etc...

Ongoing Support

In traditional therapy you have a 50-minute session and then it's typically... "Okay, see you next week!" For most people that works fine. However it's also nice to have the option for mid-week check-ins if/when needed. This is something I provide for both individuals and couples - via email or WhatsApp.

Heart to Heart

For me, this is not a "job" per se... it's a part-time passion (I'm semi-retired) therefore you can expect a different level of engagement from me at a reasonable fee. I'm all about results, but I am also keenly aware of people's need to progress at their own pace. One of the reasons I love being a therapist is because it provides a wonderful forum for having raw, authentic conversations - one to one, heart to heart - zero distractions and very little filter. Something of a rarity in the fast-paced "digital world" we currently live in! In fact if you ask me, I think we could all benefit from a bit more face to face conversation... and maybe a little less Instagram. ;

Cultural Pluralism

Having lived in beautiful Asia for nearly half my life, I've developed a deep understanding and appreciation for the cultural differences between east and west. On the surface, this may sound rudimentary however research shows that a therapist's value system (based on their own culture) has the potential to influence their "approach" to therapy and how they assist clients in dealing with certain issues. In psyche babble, it's known as cultural tunnel vision or cultural blindness.

Results-Driven

One of the greatest practical psychologists alive today, Tony Robbins, has been a mentor of mine for many years because of his tremendous ability to create immediate results for people. If there's one thing I've learned from studying his work, his methods and his materials (based on NLP) it is this: there are patterns to human behaviour. If you can recognize a pattern and see it for what it is, change often comes quickly. Clients are paying for a result or an outcome... and I believe that's what they deserve.

Risk-Free First Session

If you're new to counselling or therapy, naturally you'll be a little nervous or apprehensive. That's why I try to make the first step as easy as possible - an opportunity for clients to come in and try one session RISK-FREE. If for any reason you decide it's not for you (or not what you expected), you pay NOTHING. You only pay if you're completely happy with the first session and choose to continue. Please note the Risk-Free sessions is not available for Peak Performance coaching. Full details, click here.

Giving Back

Hong Kong is an expensive city, and so is therapy for the most part. Of course a lot of people could benefit from speaking with a mental health professional however the reality is not everyone can afford it. To help with this I dedicate roughly 10% of my time for free counselling ("pro bono"). If you or someone you know is struggling both financially & emotionally, feel free to send me an email.
