Why do use the term "coach"?Two reasons – Many people, especially teenagers, are reluctant to see a “therapist” or “counsellor” due to the stigma attached. This makes sense because fundamentally there is nothing “wrong” with anyone and they certainly don’t need to be “fixed” by a mental health practitioner. The term “coach” can be less intimidating since people typically associate the term with sports - that is, someone who helps improve your performance. As a “coach” my approach to working with people is exactly that - focused on results and incremental improvements. At times, it may be useful to examine the history or etiology of a particular issue, however for the most part we are focused on what’s working now, what’s not, and how can we make immediate changes that will have a lasting impact.

What's unique about your approach?Currently I am the only ADHD coach/specialist working in Hong Kong. Being ADHD myself, I have a particular interest in this issue and have spent a great deal of time (years and years, in fact) studying and researching it and developing my skills as a practitioner. I could be wrong, but it’s conceivable that for the moment I know more about ADHD than just about anyone else in HK. That's part of what makes my practice unique. The vast majority of counsellors/therapists/psychiatrists are “generalists” – which means they treat a wide range of conditions and work with all ages. Think about it – if you needed eye surgery, would you call your GP or speak with an ophthalmologist? I believe the same logic should be applied to mental health conditions, including ADHD. If you want the best possible treatment, you deserve to see a specialist. Although I call myself an “ADHD coach” my background is actually in psychology and counselling, therefore I bring the best of both worlds into the process. I use the practical, results-driven mindset of a coach to quickly identify areas of weakness and to create a plan of action with specific strategies for improvement. At the same time, I’m using my knowledge of human psychology and psychotherapy to interpret how ADHD is affecting a person’s life from a wider context – involving personality, environmental factors, family dynamics, history, comorbid conditions, personal beliefs, important relationships, human needs, etc. Finally, I believe in results. My clients are paying for an outcome, and that’s what they deserve. I tell clients… if they’re not seeing some sort of improvement after 3-4 sessions (not including assessment), then we may not be a good fit for one another. Disclaimer: self-motivation is a prerequisite for change. If a client is unwilling to engage in sessions or work on developing skills between sessions, progress will naturally take longer.

What is the "risk-free" first session? It’s a way for you to experience coaching/counselling with zero risk upfront. Come for one session, try it. If you decide it’s not for you (or not what you expected), you pay NOTHING. You only pay if you are completely happy, and decide to return for a second session. Please note: this is not a MONEY FREE session. It's only "free" if you decide not to return after the first session. Any questions, feel free to email: info@lifeworks.hk

How long will it take to see results? That sounds like a trick question. Maybe a better question is: how motivated are you? When clients come in for counselling, typically there’s a good deal of unconscious resistance. On the one hand they want to change (“I really do”) but either the fear of change, or the effort required, keeps them stuck. On top of that, quite often there is secondary gain involved. That is, having a “problem” (and keeping it) meets one of the client's core needs. As a practical psychologist (“mind coach”), my aim is always to create results for people as quickly as possible. In this field unfortunately there are no guarantees, however as stated in the previous section, if a client is failing to see improvement after 3-4 sessions, we may not be a good match for one another.

Do you offer online coaching (via Zoom or Skype)?Yes, possible. That being said, my personal preference is meeting face to face, at least for the first 1-2 sessions. Based on experience I find in-person sessions to be far more effective and productive. Clients tend to be more relaxed, more candid and simply more engaged when sitting on a sofa... versus sitting upright, staring at a monitor.
